* * *
“I’m not too good, Rodney.” Sheppard said so weakly, Rodney could barely hear.
Rodney looked to the ground. “No, you’re-” he stuttered. “You’re going to be fine.” Rodney winced, immediately recognizing how his attempt of comfort was pathetic.
“You… suck… at lying.”
“No-no-no, they will find us soon.” Rodney wasn’t always the beacon of optimism in a crisis, but in that situation, seeing his friend dying right before him, it was either think positive or give up on him. Rodney wasn’t ready for that yet. And that only made the unavoidable fate that lingered inside his mind ever more painful.
“They better hurry.” Rodney had to lean closer to hear Sheppard’s barely audible whisper.
“Y-you have to hang on just a little bit longer.” His voice was almost cracking. After waiting for a rescue that still hadn’t arrived after nearly 20 hours of Sheppard barely hanging on, Rodney was on the edge of breaking down in tears.
Sheppard only nodded faintly, but didn’t open his eyes.
After a moment of silence, Rodney shook Sheppard again.
“Still here,” the Colonel murmured. He opened his eyes slightly. Rodney leaned closer to hear him. “Rodney,” Sheppard whispered faintly, a hint of fear in his eyes. “I can’t feel anything anymore.”
Rodney’s heart froze and sank to the very bottom of his chest.
“Nononono, you-you’re not-” Rodney’s throat was tight.
“I am.”
“You can’t give up!” he cried out, voice breaking finally. “Not after so long,” he completed softly.
“I’m not.” Rodney had seen Sheppard’s breathing becoming ever more difficult and shallow. “But I’ve seen enough…” His voice trailed off briefly. “…enough people like this to know.” Sheppard’s red eyes stared directly at Rodney’s.
“No,” Rodney spoke softly.
“I thought I was the optimistic one.” Sheppard tried a faint smile.
“That’s not funny. You can’t die. Not a stupid death like this.” Rodney couldn’t keep the dam inside his eyes from breaking.
“It won’t be stupid you use that intel to save the Linalins.”
“John…” he chocked his words. “I’m, I’m not good at this.”
Rodney saw the hint of a very brief smile. “That makes two of us. Just tell them…” John closed his eyes, features tensing. When he spoke again his voice was sharper with emotion. “Tell them I’m sorry for not saying good bye.” A tear ran down his cheek.
Rodney managed to nod, barely seeing anything through the tears.
“Rodney,” John’s voice was now below a whisper. “You’re my best friend. I’m sorry for leaving you here alone.”
Each breath Sheppard drew was harder then the previous. Rodney saw his best friend dying and the only thing he could do was comfort him with words and wait until his pain was no longer. That’s when Rodney’s became harder.
The End
